Edit Remák is a full-time PhD student at HERG. She holds an MSc in Economics (1999) from the Budapest University of Economic Sciences (now Corvinus University, Hungary) with specialisation in Finance and graduated from the University of York with an MSc in Health Economics with distinction in 2000. She has a first degree in Economics. Previously she worked as a Research Scientist at the United BioSource Corporation where she was responsible mainly for developing models for economic evaluation of health technologies. Her work was published in journals such as the Journal of Clinical Oncology, British Journal of Cancer, and The European Journal of Health Economics among others.

Ms Remák’s research focuses on the application of real options analysis in the economic evaluation of health technologies. Economic theory shows the irrelevance of inference when making decisions about the value of health technologies, i.e. decisions should be made based on expected value irrespective of the uncertainty surrounding the estimates. However, in real life where investments are at least partly irreversible, there is uncertainty about the value of the investment and the decision-maker has control over the timing of the investment, rules of decision making seem to deviate from economic theory. The thesis will investigate whether the theory of real options may be used to explain some of the discrepancies.

Research interests: health technology assessment, quantitative decision analysis, modelling, application of business methods to evaluation of health technologies
