Course Overview

This degree has arisen from the demand in the motorsport industry for graduates who have a rigorous and traditional academic education coupled with a well-developed appreciation of the highly competitive and commercial nature of this specialist and fast-moving industry. You will study similar modules to those of a standard mechanical engineering course but with a strong flavour of motorsport in the application of these topics.

Levels 1 and 2 are designed to ensure you have a firm grasp of the theoretical and practical elements of the broader discipline. Some modules are specific to the course and relate closely to racing vehicle materials, manufacturing methods and electronics. Level 3 is directly related to motor racing engineering.

Project work is commonplace and is usually completed in groups to imitate the everyday experience in an engineering firm where specialists must pool their talents to design a solution to some problem.

MEng or BEng options

If you enter the BEng route, you can transfer to the MEng programme at the end of Level 2 by obtaining an average of 60% at that level.

Work Placements

You have the option of spending a year working in the motorsport industry between Levels 2 and 3 and many use this work experience as a basis for their major project. Placements may be with leading motorsport vehicle and component manufacturers such as Rolls-Royce Motors, Ford and BMW or with motor racing companies such as Renault F1, Williams F1 and Lotus.

You will also be given the opportunity to take part in the Formula Student Competition, which sets teams the task of building and racing a car. Brunel has been involved in the competition from the start and has won a number of first prizes, including Best UK Class 1 Team in 2002 and Most Desirable Engineering Product for the car itself in 2003.

Career Opportunities

This course will set you on track for a career in the motorsport industry. Graduates from Brunel are working in leading teams in Formula One, as well as the other formulas and in rallying. Many other graduates are working for component manufacturers who serve both motorsport and other engineering specialisms.

Brunel Racing 2009 Triumph

Event Report: Silverstone

Brunel Racing enjoyed great success at Formula Student Silverstone 2009, exceeding all expectations to finish 6th in the competition ! The result makes Brunel the second-placed UK university in the largest Formula Student competition ever - with 87 teams worldwide competing, and the entire team is immensely proud of this achievement. The final result is Brunel's best normalised Class 1 finish in the ten years the University has competed in Formula Student, having previously finished 4th from 40 teams in 2002.

The Endurance event is the toughest test of the competition counting for 40% of the overall points. In a heavily rain-affected session, Andrew Bonjour and Rob Still posted consistently fast lap times enabling the team to finish fourth in the Endurance timings. With an excellent third-lowest fuel consumption of 2.124l, our combined endurance-economy score was the highest at the competition at 355.7 points.

The final results show an incredibly close tie between positions 4, 5 and 6, with Brunel University finishing 6th overall, 0.4 points behind fifth-placed Helsinki Metropolia UAS and 1.6 points behind fourth-placed top UK team, University of Bath.
