What is BFSL
BFSL is a research team based within the mechanical engineering subject area at
Brunel
University in Uxbridge, just North of London Heathrow airport. Our primary objective is to conduct high quality research into areas related to flight mechanics, aviation safety and aircraft design – saving lives and improving the body of aeronautical knowledge.
Our research facilities
BFSL has access to all of the research laboratory facilities at
Brunel
University , as well as a collaboration with the turbomachinery research group at the
University of
Sussex . In particular we have use of several small low speed wind tunnels, a small (4”x1”) M=1.8 blowdown tunnel, Brunel’s modified Merlin MP521 single-seat generic aircraft simulator (which has a programmable flight mechanics model, software controllable powered flying controls in pitch and roll, and a 6DOF Stewart platform). We are also have portable GPS and cockpit voice recorders and are currently commissioning a portable FTI system giving 3D location, 3D accelerations, magnetic heading and barometric altitude, and also have access to a selection of single engined light and microlight aeroplanes for research purposes as required.

Joining BFSL
If we have specific funded vacancies for postgraduate or postdoctoral researchers, then these will always be advertised on
Brunel
University ’s website, and at www.jobs.ac.uk.
If you are a prospective researcher: whether self-funding, with research funds allocated to your proposed research, or hoping to make an application for funding to carry out research in flight safety, aircraft design or flight mechanics (whether for Brunel University funds, or from any other source) then please contact Dr Guy Gratton to discuss what might be possible.
