A research-friendly environment
The School of Sport and Education is a research-friendly environment with research activity focused on two fields of enquiry – the sport sciences and education. It has a lively mix of new researchers working alongside more experienced colleagues, many of whom are from relevant professional backgrounds within the domains of education, youth work and sport.
The school has research students registered for PhD and MPhil programmes, as well as EdD degrees. Students are attached to, and undertake research closely allied to research themes within the School’s subject areas.
Sport Sciences comprises a rich variety of discipline-specific approaches to sport and exercise; encompassing physiology, biomechanics, psychology, and sociology, whilst physical educational research is constituted by sociological, pedagogical and practice-based perspectives.
Education staff engage in research within a range of disciplinary and practice-influenced perspectives including:
- Sociology of education and youth cultures
- Psychological aspects of pedagogy and special needs
- Philosophical approaches to enhancing children's learning
