Background and Current Research Interests

Sanjay Sharma took up a lecturing post in Sociology and Communications in September 2004. He has previously held teaching posts at the University of East London , Staffordshire, and Manchester University . His work is of an interdisciplinary nature, drawing on cultural, media and sociological studies approaches.

Sanjay's research is substantively located in the areas of cultural politics, racialization and difference, which critically consider questions of representation, globalization, radical pedagogy, identity and subjectivity. These interventions operate through two research thematics of 'critical multiculturalism' and 'disapora youth cultures'. In particular, his work has been concerned with bridging conceptual and political issues, especially in relation to the production of 'racialized' knowledge and representation.

Sanjay is a convenor of the Race Forum (British Sociological Association), and on the Advisory Editorial Board of the Journal, Social Movement Studies. He is also co-editor of the online 'race' Journal darkmatter

At Brunel he teaches in the areas of communications, globalisation and culture, and research methods.
