This centre was set up in 1987 by Professor Mike Bevis (It’s founding Director and still a consulting Director) and since then it has steadily expanded. Its current Director is Professor Jack Silver who arrived in January 2006 and brought with him the internationally renowned Centre for Phosphors and Display Materials (CPDM), which has been incorporated into the Wolfson Centre for Materials Processing. The CPDM has expertise in the synthesis and morphological control of small inorganic micrometer size particles as well as nanometer size particles. The pre-CPDM research of the Wolfson Centre is now referred to as the Centre for Materials. Although the Wolfson centre has these two distinct research themes there is a great deal of synergy between them, and the joint expertise of the two groups has already proven beneficial to both centres, making the whole more than the sum of the two parts.
