How to spot and stop phishing attacks

Phishing is a technique that involves deceiving the user in order to steal confidential information.91% of data breaches start with a phishing email. Tips to spot a phishing attack: 

  • The email has come from an obscure email address
  • The email contains a mismatched URL
  • The URL contains a misleading domain name
  • The email contains poor spelling and grammar
  • The email asks for personal information
  • The email asks you to send money to cover expenses
  • The email makes unrealistic threats
  • The email appears to be from a government agency
  • You didn’t initiate the action, i.e. entering into a competition
  • If the offer seems too good to be true then it probably is
  • If something just doesn’t look right do not risk it. The best way to prevent phishing is to reject an email you are unsure about​
