The University believes that its external examiners play a key role in institutional quality assurance. External examiners are appointed to assist the University to monitor the standards of the awards it makes to its students and the quality of education provided. They act as independent and impartial advisors and are able to provide informed comment on the standards set and student achievement in relation to those standards. The University requires its external examiners to have an appropriate level of academic or professional expertise and experience sufficient to command the respect of colleagues.

The main purposes of external examining are to verify that standards are appropriate for the award(s) that the external has been appointed to examine, to assist the University in the comparison of academic standards with other similar institutions, and to ensure that assessment processes are fair and applied appropriately in the context of the University's regulations. Chapter B7 of the Quality Code provides further context for the role.

The role and responsibilities of Brunel's external examiners are set out in regulation 4.105 to 4.126 of Senate Regulation 4.

The criteria and process for the approval of external examiners for taught programmes are set out in appointment of a new examiner or for an extension to the current responsibilities of an existing external.

Heads of Schools are responsible for ensuring that external examiners are appropriately briefed and guidelines are provided in Senate Regulation 4 to ensure that each department is clear about matters such as the information that should be provided to externals. An annual briefing day is held in February each year for all external examiners to Brunel's taught programmes. This year's event was held on 18 February and the presentations are attached here and include information on Panels and Boards of Examiners, Policies and Practices, and the recent review of the Postgraduate Taught Regulations.

The University requires all external examiners to report formally each year. All external examiners receive an annual payment on receipt of the annual report.

External examiners are also appointed for research degree candidates; Senate Regulation 5 sets out the assessment regulations for such students.
