Conduct of Elections to Council

3.1 Elections shall take place in the appropriate academic year before 30 June. The persons elected shall take office on the following 1 August

3.2 The categories and numbers to be elected to Council are:

  1. Two members elected from their own number by the Professors, Readers, Senior Lecturers and Lecturers of the University, who are neither Pro-Vice Chancellors, Deans, Heads of School or Department or the equivalent and
  2. Two persons being administrative, clerical or technical staff of the University holding full- or part-time employment contracts with the University, elected from among their own number.

3.3 The Secretary to the Council shall ask for nominations at least four weeks before the date fixed for the election

3.4 Nomination forms must carry the signature of two members of staff eligible to vote in the election, and from the same category, and the written agreement of the nominee to serve on the Council if elected

3.5 The election shall be by ballot and by majority vote. In the case of a tie leading to an unclear decision, another election shall be held, the only candidates being those who received an equal number of votes.

3.7 The period of office shall normally be 4 years. Elected representatives shall be eligible for re-election on one further occasion for up to four years.

3.8 When a vacancy occurs (or is expected to occur), unless elections under 3.1 are scheduled before the next meeting of the Council, the vacancy shall be filled by the candidate with the next highest number of votes in the election at which the member retiring was elected. The new representative shall serve until the date of the next election. Where there is no such candidate or where the vacancy or vacancies would leave no elected representative, an election shall be called by the Secretary in accordance with this Ordinance.
