Brunel University London Fairtrade Steering Group

The idea to form the Brunel University London Fairtrade Steering Group to campaign for Fairtrade came about in November 2008.

Professor Ken Darby-Dowman (Pro-Vice Chancellor for Strategy and Staff Development), Rev Charles Sargent (from the University Chaplaincy), Ms Beverley Williams (Costcutter), and Mr Howard Shearer (Head of Catering) were involved at an early stage because of their known commitment to Fairtrade.

Other members of staff and representatives from the Union of Brunel Students were also invited to join. The first meeting was held in January 2009.

The Steering Group has contributed to the success of a number of events to promote Fairtrade together with Catering, Chaplaincy and the Student Union.

The Steering Group has been particularly effective in the promotion of Fairtrade principles and in delivering real change to the operation of the University. The Group also emphasises the University’s firm commitment to sustainability. Members of the Group have evolved since its inception but still retain staff from the core areas of the original Group.

Meetings are held approximately twice a term - If you are interested and would like to know more about coming along or possibly joining us, please contact Linda Hazell at linda.hazell@brunel.ac.uk.
