Great Britain

The world's first iron hulled, screw propeller-driven, steam powered passenger liner. Launched in 1843, the largest ship of her day (twice the tonnage of any previous ship), the Great Britain probably carried more passengers between England and Australia than any other ship in the 19th century. She carried troops to and from the Crimean War and Indian Mutiny and carried the first ever English cricket team to tour Australia.
She ended her active life in the Falkland Islands following storm damage near Cape Horn. She was towed home to Bristol in 1970 (see inset).
Overall length 322 feet.
