Memories of Brunel
Syd Urry
Professor Syd Urry joined Brunel University while it was still Brunel College in 1960, having previously worked as an aeronautical engineer. In 1967, he took on the role of client's representative in the construction of the new Uxbridge site, working alongside architect Sir Richard Sheppard in setting out an integrated campus. He went on to establish the framework for the sandwich course system at the University, still one its trademarks, and set up its first Careers Office. In the 1970s he created and became head of a new Department of Building Technology. He retired in 1984 but continued to teach part-time in departments as diverse as Government, Materials and Mechanical Engineering. He was awarded an honorary degree by Brunel in 1994, and continued to be an enthusiastic ambassador for the University, and I K Brunel's greatest admirer, until his sudden death in 1999.
