Professor Alfred John Sutton Pippard

Professor Pippard was Professor of Civil Engineering and Head of Department at Imperial College from 1933 to 1956. Before that he was Professor of Civil Engineering at Bristol University (1928-1933) where he was involved in the experimental testing of the R100 and R101 airships.

He was Chairman or the Thames Pollution Committee from 1951 to 1961. In 1954 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and was President of the Institution of Civil engineers from 1958 to 1959.

Professor Pippard holds strong views on what education is needed by an aeronautical engineer, and while recognising that practical training and workshop skills are essential, in a paper presented to the Royal Aeronautical Society in 1935, he says "University years should be devoted to the study of engineering science with as little emphasis as possible on the practical interests of the work".

July 1968

Update: Professor Pippard died in 1969.
