Michael Hoffman

The University wished very much to honour Michael Hoffman who served as Chairman of Council from 1991 until July 1997. Sadly, Mr Hoffman died of cancer in April this year. His widow, Helen Hoffman, will collect the award in his memory.

Michael Hoffman read mechanical engineering at Bristol University and then worked for most of the major British engineering companies: Rolls Royce, Perkins Engines, Massey Ferguson, and Babcock's, before joining Thames Water as Group Chief Executive in 1989. He was a member of the Monopolies and Mergers Commission from 1988 to 1994 and was made a Freeman of the City of London in 1984. He was a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineers.
