Alex A Jarratt - 1979

Alex Jarratt joined Reed in 1970 and was appointed a Director of Reed International Limited and also Managing Director of International Publishing Corporation (IPC). He succeeded Sir Hugh Cudlipp (now Lord Cudlipp) as Chairman of IPC in 1973. As Chairman and Chief Executive of IPC - the second largest of the then four Reed UK/European Main Divisions - Alex Jarratt was responsible for the Reed publishing and printing interests in the UK, Europe and the United States. He became Chairman and Chief Executive of Reed International on 5th December 1974.

Alex Jarratt brought to Reed considerable experience in industrial relations and was one of a group which, in 1966, prepared a report on pay and conditions of service in British Rail. He was called in as independent chairman during the national dispute of April 1972.

In 1972 he was appointed a member of the Supervisory Board of Thyssen Bornemisza and in 1974 he became a director of Associated Television. In 1975 he became a non-executive director of Imperial Chemical Industries Limited and also a non-executive director of Goodyear Tyre and Rubber Company (Great Britain) Limited.

He is a member of the National Economic Development Council, a member of the Confederation of British Industries' President's Committee and Economic Policy Committee, Chairman of the Industrial Society and Chairman of the Administrative Staff College, Henley. He is a Governor of the London Graduate School of Business Studies, the Ashridge Management College, a member of the Court of Cranfield Institute of Technology, a Fellow of the British Institute of Management and a member of the President's Committee of the Advertising Association.
