Why did you choose Brunel University?

There is a great sense of community at Brunel: it’s the only university where you get a special campus atmosphere together with the proximity of London. I liked the modules available. As well as offering modules on literary history and theory, there are practical classes on academic writing and research, which are really helpful.

How would you describe the learning experience?

At level one, my favourite module was definitely Literary Theory: some of those classes changed the way I think about myself and the world. I enjoyed the variety of types of texts; we studied poetry and prose as well as a whole module on dramatic texts.

At level two, I love the 19th Century Novel module, which is really surprising because I thought I really disliked them, but it turns out that I really enjoy reading and studying them!

Research skills and private study are key factors for success at university level. We attend lectures on the best ways to approach research, which are really helpful. I really enjoy research at Brunel, especially because the library is well-stocked and open 24 hours during the term!

The classroom and learning experience at Brunel is really friendly. You get to know most of the people on your course pretty quickly – so seminars are not intimidating and you can express your ideas freely. The lecturers and seminar leaders are really approachable – they answer any questions you have, and if you need help with a concept or essay, they’re really accommodating and you can pop into their office for a chat about it.

What skills are you developing? What are some of the benefits for you?

Studying English cultivates many transferable skills, such as critical thinking, analytic abilities and communication skills. My confidence, especially in terms of expressing my ideas, has increased dramatically, which is helpful in a work environment. Also the quality of my writing has improved considerably. I can write in a much more professional and coherent manner.

Beyond the classroom, what do you like about the Brunel student experience?

The student experience at Brunel has to be one of the main reasons for coming here. The campus community is very friendly and close-knit, you see the same faces most days, and you begin to feel at home really quickly. Also the Student Union is exceptional: events take place every night, and there are three different venues so there’s always something to do and somewhere to go. I’ve had countless great nights at the Union!

I’m a member of RAG (“Raising and Giving”), which means I am involved in charity events, fund-raising and promotion. Through this experience, I have met students from other courses as well as my own.

As a student at the School of Arts, you receive a free membership to the Arts Centre, which means unlimited access to various arts classes (although you have to pay a small material fee for some). On Wednesday afternoons, I attend painting and photography classes.

Through extra-curricular activities, such as sports and volunteer opportunities, I am developing skills and learning from new experiences.

How is Brunel helping you to achieve your long-term goals?

In the long-term, I want to go into the publishing industry. Brunel is really helpful on the employment side of things. They offer free workshops and lectures on finding a placement, writing a cover letter and improving your CV. Right now the Placement and Careers Centre are helping me to find a work experience placement for the summer. Also there are opportunities for volunteer work, which means that by the time I graduate, I should be prepared for employment. However, I am enjoying the learning experience so much that I may pursue an MA in English, which Brunel also offers, before I take up my dream job in the creative industries.
