Why did you choose Brunel University?

I chose Brunel because I heard that they have an excellent English programme. Furthermore, I really liked the syllabus when I came here for the open day and it just seemed like the right course for me as an individual.

How would you describe the learning experience?

I have covered quite a variety of topics already. I really enjoyed my Introduction to Writing Fiction module as it helped me release a lot of creative energy and develop my story writing skills. I have really enjoyed the texts that I have read. Gordimer’s “The Moment before the Gun Went Off” has been really interesting to me, as well as Coleridge’s “Kubla Khan”.

I find the learning environment a lot more independent but it is also very invigorating. I find it more engaging, especially in seminars as I prefer the smaller working environment and the informality of it as well. It is a change from how I was taught at A-level as I feel able to give my interpretation of ideas rather than just being taught the ideas.

What skills are you developing? What are some of the benefits for you?

I have developed my ability to write and also analyse a text in detail which can transfer across many areas as those are skills that employers look for, especially in the industry that I am looking to get into (Journalism). Also, I have been given the opportunity to express my own ideas which can help as I can give input and solutions to problems and a lot of employers ask for those kinds of skills when you look to get a job. I have also been able to develop my leadership and teamwork skills.

Beyond the classroom, what do you like about the Brunel student experience?

The student experience can initially seem daunting, however it is not that scary at all! Many of the people that are in your lectures and seminars are often in the same position that you are in. I have been able to make a lot of new friends through the socials that the School of Arts have put on. I also live on campus, which means I share my living spaces with other people and is an easy way to interact with other students that may not necessarily be in your field of study. I have also joined a few clubs here at Brunel like horse riding, which I had never done before; it’s extremely fun and gets you really fit, too. I have also signed up to trampolining and pole dancing. These clubs put on a lot of their own socials and parties and I also get a chance to go to Italy through the sports clubs, so there are so many opportunities.

How is Brunel helping you to achieve your long-term goals?

Although I am doing an English degree I am looking to go into Journalism in the long-term and heard that it would be better for me to go through English instead. The great thing is that a lot of the School of Arts is able to interact with each other, or I feel they are, as I’ve met a lot of different people that aren’t doing my course. Also, Brunel is able to give you plenty of opportunities to participate in different activities that can help you with all sorts of areas.

In your view, why should prospective students choose Brunel?

I think that a prospective student should choose Brunel because the people here are amazing – from the professors to friends everyone makes you feel really welcome. Also, the School of Arts is amazing and they are always available to help you achieve what you want, all you have to do is ask them. Moreover, they are loads of opportunities to get involved in everything around campus and it’s not all just about the work, it’s also about the experience and being a part of something and people strive to make sure that you are included here.
