Why did you choose Brunel University?

I chose Brunel University for English because of its high ranking on the Guardian University League Table. I read the staff profiles online and saw that all of the members of staff had published articles and/or books. I thought that was fantastic as they could offer advice for aspiring writers. Prior to joining Brunel, I’d also heard that the university offers students a wonderful social experience, with its wide range of societies to join.

How would you describe the learning experience?

At level one, I have particularly enjoyed Approaches to Poetry and Prose because of the seminars. Seminars give you a deeper insight into what you have learnt in the lecture with an open forum to discuss what you don’t understand and the preparation before class makes sure that you are on target. My seminar leaders have been helpful and engaging; they make sure we don’t leave the seminar feeling confused about anything.

I have also enjoyed my Shakespeare module. Previously, my only exposure to Shakespeare was through a stage production of Romeo and Juliet. I had not studied any of his works, so I was a bit apprehensive about this module, but Brunel lecturers have presented many useful secondary sources and critical perspectives about Shakespeare’s works; their presentations on Shakespeare’s language have also been extremely helpful. Now I feel that I am on the same level as other students in the class, many of whom had studied Shakespeare previously.

What skills are you developing? What are some of the benefits for you?

At Brunel, I have learned how to work independently and manage my time. At university, sometimes you have a lot on your plate, and if you do not stay organised, things can get out of control. To stay on top of my schedule, I keep a diary and use my phone for reminders and alerts. These are great life skills, which will also help me professionally.

I have also learned to work in teams thanks to group presentations. Group work teaches you to be open to other points of view, develops leadership skills and shows you how to work effectively with others. These are all transferable skills, which I can now bring to the workplace.

Beyond the classroom, what do you like about the Brunel student experience?

I love my English course because I am doing something I enjoy. Beyond the classroom, I work with study buddies on coursework preparation and assignments. I’ve made many friends by talking to fellow students in my lectures and seminars as well as through societies at Brunel. At the same time, I still get to see my boyfriend and friends back home.

This year I’ve grown as a person in many ways. For example, I went to the money doctor on campus in order to identify ways to save money and manage my finances. I have taken advantage of Brunel Counselling Services and that has been very helpful. Overall, I’ve learned to be open to meeting new people and the opportunities that brings.

How is Brunel helping you to achieve your long-term goals?

I would like to work in the creative industries, possibly as a writer, journalist or advertising executive. I’m truly amazed at the opportunities that Brunel creates to help you meet your goals. Each week I receive various emails from Brunel about events and opportunities that could help my career. It’s great!

In 2013, I am going to curate the Brunel creative writers’ twitter account, which will give me some social media experience. This will be a great addition to my CV. Moreover, there is an opportunity for a work experience placement with a top advertising company. There is even a possibility of applying for a scholarship with them, which is amazing. By developing skills and gaining experience now, I can increase my prospects for obtaining full-time employment after my studies.

In your view, why should prospective students choose Brunel?

The Brunel English members of staff have tremendous experience in their fields and offer great insight into anything you want to know regarding your course. Brunel constantly creates opportunities for you to gain experience and helps to prepare you for work in your chosen field when you leave. There are many fun social activities for you to join so that you achieve balance in your work and personal life. You work hard and play hard too.
