I knew I wanted to choose a campus-based university and a friend already studying at Brunel suggested I consider it. At that point I wasn’t sure of what my career path might be but I wanted to study English and the courses offered within the School of Arts looked excellent. I was initially studying BA English with Creative Writing, but in my second year I switched to BA English to focus on my interest in Renaissance literature. Lectures were interesting, challenging and entertaining. I was pushed out of my comfort zone, which was a little scary, but I was supported by my personal tutor who helped me build my confidence and refine my skills. Bill Leahy was a great personal tutor and a fantastic lecturer who made our classes engaging and fun!
After graduating I secured a job at Brunel working as an Admissions Officer. I am currently employed by the Royal Society of Chemistry as an Advice and Guidance specialist, as well as working as a help line volunteer for Beat, a charity supporting people affected by eating disorders. Communication is hugely important in my current role and my chosen degree gave me the skills and the confidence to be able to communicate effectively. I found giving presentations at university very daunting but it was great practice for me as now I deliver training presentations to people around the country with no problem at all.
I have also started my own successful cupcake business, putting my creative skills to good use to spread joy through the medium of cake! Starting my own business, Loulabelle's Cupcakery, was a huge achievement and something I am incredibly proud of. I was fairly nervous when I was initially considering this venture but with hard work and dedication you can achieve more than you ever thought possible!
Another notable achievement was successfully executing an AWESOME wedding in 2010 when I happily married Andy, a fellow Brunel student! As the University brought us together we decided it was only fitting to have a Brunel themed wedding!
If I could give one piece of advice to a prospective student it would be don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. It might be scary, it might be confusing, but it might lead to your biggest successes and greatest achievements.
