Why did you choose Brunel University?
I heard that Brunel had a good reputation. I like the location, it being such an easy commute to London. This enables you to take advantage of any work experience opportunities that could arise during the holidays. I also really liked the look and feel of the campus when I came here on my open day. Brunel was also the first university on UCAS to accept me unconditionally and I liked how fast they responded.
How would you describe the learning experience?
In creative writing my favourite module has been Screenwriting. The lecturer, Max Kinnings, is really involved. He is always willing to help you and answer any questions you may have.
In English, I especially liked the module on the 19th Century Novel. The lectures are so interesting! Also we engage in really good discussions in the seminars and the seminar leader is really enthusiastic.
What skills are you developing? What are some of the benefits for you?
My style of writing has definitely matured. When I look at some of the first pieces of work I completed, I can really see how far I have come in just one short year. Staff at Brunel encourage you to work hard, to really want to succeed. I’m better at getting my point across in discussions and producing an argument on a topic. The Brunel experience has encouraged me to think independently and creatively.
Beyond the classroom, what do you like about the Brunel student experience?
Brunel is a really friendly campus, which is great, and everyone was so welcoming that making friends was easy.
I am currently doing a course to learn basic Mandarin this year, which is free for all Brunel students. I find it really enjoyable and challenging. I am also planning on starting to learn the guitar which is free for all School of Arts students.
The Freshers’ Fayre is a must; it’s a great place to find out what activities you can do on campus, which is always fun. Nights out at Loco’s or The Academy are good and the nightlife off campus in Uxbridge is excellent as well.
How is Brunel helping you to achieve your long-term goals?
There are always opportunities to help you to achieve your goals. You’re encouraged to volunteer to gain experience, which is really helpful for your CV. The job shop on campus is really helpful for finding work experience opportunities.
Eventually, I want to go on to do a Masters degree in English, which I will hope to complete at Brunel University.
In your view, why should prospective students choose Brunel?
It’s just a lovely university. Brunel is great at helping you to get on to the career ladder. There is always something going on so you can never get bored. The level of teaching and resources are great and there is always someone on hand to help you if you need it, even if it’s just getting help in figuring out how to turn on a washing machine!
