School of Arts launches iPad version of MA Documentary Practice handbook
Students on the MA Documentary Practice programme were recently issued with iPads running an interactive programme handbook specifically designed for their programme of studies. The iPads were loaned to the students for the duration of their course.
The interactive iPad Handbook contains over 90 pages of detailed, fully-searchable information about the programme and individual modules and is packed with videos, photo galleries, class slides, reading lists and other interactive resources.
One of the students' favourite features is the interactive Equipment Browser which contains information about equipment available to students throughout their programme, including tech specs, instruction manuals and product photos/videos.
Other features of the Handbook which proved popular are the ability to email academic, technical and admin staff directly from the Handbook, the ability to view trailers and previous student work, and also the comprehensive note-taking and glossary facilities.
"This resource will undoubtedly have a huge influence on prospective students making their decision about whether to study at Brunel University or elsewhere", said postgraduate student Jessica Van Lachterop, "it looks great and I've seen nothing remotely like this out there."
Fellow student Bogdan Jugureanu said "I've used many educational apps and ebooks on the iPad, and this is top-notch quality whether one looks at content, design or functionality. It's simply a great tool, and being given a retina display iPad to use throughout our studies is fantastic."
Course convenor Professor Mike Wayne commented that the iPad Handbook "is an outstanding resource which is simple to use and will no doubt enhance students' experience and studies here at Brunel. The feedback we are getting is resoundingly positive and it seems this is set to become a permanent feature of what was already a high-quality programme."
The iPad Handbook was conceptualised and designed by Brunel School of Arts' Malcolm Zammit (Tech Operations Manager, Screen Media) as part of an ongoing project that was made possible through Brunel Learning & Teaching Innovation funding together with backing from the School of Arts and Brunel University.
