Mara Arts

Subject area: Screen Media

Course: BA Film and Television Studies

Level: Undergraduate

Year: Graduated in 2011

Soon after starting my BA at Brunel I realised I had made the right choice in coming there; the course is engaging, the campus facilities are modern and last but not least, the extra-curricular activities are booming. During my three years at Brunel I worked as a sub-editor for the LeNurb, treasurer for the Film Society, secretary of the Societies Guild and Technical Director for the Arts Centre technical crew. Looking back I can definitely say that my extra-curricular activities have been just as, if not more, important in my development from teenager to adult. Plus, I have met some of my best friends through these clubs and societies!

What I particularly enjoyed about the Film & TV course was the high level of independence you get from the tutors. From year 2 you get to pick (most) of your subjects yourself, you can propose your own research questions and there is the option of taking elective modules outside your own course.

After my graduation I initially had a hard time finding a job or placement, like most other graduates. Eventually I was lucky enough to get a work experience post at a Dutch non-profit organisation, Lokaalmondiaal. I’m involved in the organisation of a conference for foreign correspondents and other journalists. Although I am not directly involved with the production of films, it is still great experience to work out in the ‘real world’ and I am gaining a lot of organisational and communication skills. Plus Lokaalmondiaal has a large network within the Dutch media world, so you never know where this may lead me next!

Brunel is a place where you can fully develop your talents and interests, both within your course and outside of it. My time there has given me a lot of friends, new skills and most importantly, a sound degree with which I can start my career.
