Subject area: Music

Course: BA Music

Level: Undergraduate

Year: 1999-2002

I graduated from Brunel in 2002 with a BA in music. I am now predominantly a freelance musician and my current work involves playing percussion for contemporary dance classes, playing drum kit for a pirate band and being half of a junk percussion duo, which involves playing a giant home-made drum kit in a variety of locations and putting on workshops in schools.

Two of these jobs came directly through contacts from Brunel. The choreographer of a performance that the then head of drama was producing and that I was playing percussion for introduced me to playing for dance classes. And Katie, the other half of the junk percussion duo, was in my year at Brunel. The pirate band has come from years of networking, depping, and jamming!

During my time at Brunel, I didn't have a clue what I wanted to do after graduating. But getting involved with the rich variety of activities that were going on (for example New Music Ensemble, Big Band, Music Society, and various student and tutor projects) made me realise that performing was the way to go, and nearly 11 years later I am happy to say that I am still working with a few and in touch with many of the people I met on the course.
