Research and Teaching

Research Overview

Joel completed a PhD on theatre and performance photography in 2008. His work on photography is emblematic of a range of research interests around the image, and previous research has embraced notions of performance documentation and intermediality, considering the status and place of images in theatre and performance. Building on his experience of working at the Paris CTO over several years, another strand of Joel’s research concerns theatre of the oppressed, and a consideration of that practice as it relates to political economy and the law. He has published work in Contemporary Theatre Review and About Performance, as well as contributing chapters to books, and recently presented research at ATHE in Los Angeles and at the University of Mainz.

Teaching Activity

Joel currently contributes to the following modules: Applied Drama Practice, Community Project, Devising, Histories.
