The recognition of business relationships, their importance for subsidiary performance and development, and their role as sources for new knowledge imperative to MNC evolution, has brought a much more permeable border between the firm and the environment compared to extant perspectives.

It also questions the sometimes simplistic view on hierarchical relations assumed and qualifies why subsidiaries sometimes takes on leading strategic roles. In this seminar I will try to recapitulate the studies on subsidiary external embeddedness and categorize them according to the above.  A fair share of the seminar is devoted to the more recent studies trying to understand how the immediate business environment of the Subsidiary – counterpart relation, i.e. “second order network”, and the institutional environment influence subsidiary external embeddedness, and how further research including issues such as, internal/corporate embeddedness, RBV, outsourcing and offshoring, and more, can advance the research stream on subsidiaries in IB.
