About Professor Fan

Fan, a Professor of Metallurgy, is the Founder and current Director of BCAST at Brunel University. He is the Principal Investigator/Director of the EPSRC Centre – LiME, a national centre of excellence in liquid metal engineering, and also is the principal investigator of the EPSRC funded national programme TARF-LCV involving 8 universities.

He obtained his first degree in Metallurgy from University of Science and Technology Beijing and his PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from University of Surrey. He started his academic career in 1997 at Brunel University, and prior to this he was a research fellow at University of Oxford and University of Surrey.

Awards and Affiliations

He has published over 270 scientific papers with an H-Index of 28. He was the recipient of the Elegant Work Prize (1995) and the Cook/Ablett Award (2003) of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) and the Corac Research Award (2003) of Brunel University, Dowding Medal and Prize (2012) of IOM3, Diploma Award (2012) of the Institute of Cast Metals Engineers (ICME).

Professor Fan is the principal inventor of a number of solidification processing technologies. He holds 3 international patents and 6 UK patents. He is a Joint Chairman of the Casting Division and a Board Member of Light Metals Division of IOM3, a Fellow of IOM3, a Fellow of ICME, Chairman of 3 international conferences and a member of the scientific committee of 6 international conferences on solidification and solidification processing.

Professor Fan’s current research interest covers metallic materials processing, solidification under intensive forced convection, heterogeneous nucleation, structure of liquid metals, rheology and alloy development.
