About Derek
Derek Fisher, Professor for Biochemistry, joined BIB in 2002 after retiring from the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine in London University where he was Reader in Biochemistry. He had taught Biochemistry and Cell Biology to Medical students for over 30 years and his research interests at the Free were membrane fusion, phase partitioning in aqueous 2-phase system and polymer (polyethylene glycol, PEG modification (PEGylation) of liposomes and peptides as new biopharmaceuticals. From 1995-2001 he was seconded, as Director of Biochemistry to PolyMASC Pharmaceutical plc, a spin out company in which he was a founding scientist. He has over 100 publications, 5 patents (2 granted) in the field of PEG-liposomes and PEG-cytokines and has co-edited 3 books on bioseparations: “Partitioning in Aqueous Two-Phase Systems. Theory, Methods, Uses and Applications in Biotechnology”; Separations Using Aqueous Phase Systems. Applications in Cell Biology and Biotechnology” and “Cell Separations”.Research Interests
At BIB he is developing biological applications of countercurrent chromatography (CCC). These include separation of bioactive components of Chinese Herbal Medicine (with collaboration within the UK Consortium for the Globalisation of Chinese Medicines and with the XiangCam TCM Research Centre at Babraham) , peptides, proteins and nanoscale particles such as plasmids, viruses and virus-like particles. and using CCC as a bioreactor.Research Area
