Ali Osman

Overview

Ali Osman is a Sudanese composer, born in 1958, resident of Egypt since 1978, He started his musical educational at Cairo conservatoire after secondary school. He studied composition mainly with Gamal Abdel Rahim and he considered himself one of his disciples. He continued his postgraduate studies with Awatif Abdel Karim . He also studied with Bertold Hummel (Germany) and Robert Woshborn (USA).

Awards

  • A secondary diploma in composition and double bass From Cairo Conservatoire.
  • Bachelor in composition and theories with distinction From Cairo Conservatoire.
  • Master Degree in composition and theories from Cairo Conservatoire. (1990)
  • PHD in composition, from Cairo Conservatoire. (2009)
  • He was awarded the third prize in a composition competition held by the Minister of Culture supervised by Dr Samha Alkoly at the Opera House. "Abo Bakr khairat music composition"
  • He participated with other professors supervised by Dr Samha Alkholy in issuing a series of books titled “Egyptian Contemporary Music”.

Activities

  • Wrote music articles in Cairo magazine and Folkloric Arts magazine.
  • Working as a lecturer at Cairo Conservatoire and the Arabic Music Institute at the Department of composition and conducting.
  • Is the principal coach and conductor of "The Light and Hope Orchestra" for blind girls (Egypt)
  • Participated in the conference that was held by the Ministry of Culture (1995) which was about "the musical innovators in Egypt up to the end of the twentieth century.
  • Participated in a symposium titled (oriental, occidental, accord) held in Salzburg Austria with his string quartet (Fusion) and presented a paper.
  • Some of his works were published in (Intlopus) USA, Oxford University Press, and Peer Music Germany.
  • Participated in the concerts that was given by the Egyptian Musical Youth Organization, at the Opera House, the (AUC), and the cultural centers in Cairo . Some of his works were recorded for the music program at the Egyptian radio.
  • Some of his works were performed in Germany, Munich, Wurzburg, in the festival 'ten days of new music in Africa" in (1995). America, China, Austria.
  • Was granted a scholarship to visit Switzerland (composer in residence) for four months and he gave a concert there and it was recorded on CD by the Swiss Radio.
