Intellectual Property, Internet and Media Research Centre

The Intellectual Property, Internet and Media Research Centre (IPIMRC) was established in 2006 to assist and promote study and research in all areas of intellectual property and information law, with particular emphasis on new communication technologies. Members of IPIMRC undertake both theoretical and empirical research on the complex intersection of law and technology and are active in a range of areas currently including international and European intellectual property, practice and management of intellectual property, digital copyright, internet privacy and data protection, e-commerce regulation and cyber consumerism.

The IPIMRC encourages the publication of academically excellent research that is conducted in the context of Brunel Law School postgraduate programmes and research degrees. This process includes presentation of the work made in internal seminars and review by members of the Centre.

Members of the IPIMRC welcome applications for doctoral research in any area of intellectual property, media or internet law.

Masters degree teaching

Brunel Law School provides a wide range of specialised Master’s degree teaching in intellectual property law. This includes an LLM course in International Intellectual Property Law and a Postgraduate (PG) Certificate in Intellectual Property Law. Brunel Law School Academics Short-listed for University-wide Student-led Teaching Awards in three categories of Excellence (2012-13)

Professor Benedict Tendayi Chigara was shortlisted for the Inspirational Teaching Award alongside two other colleagues from the School of Arts; Dr Faye Fangfei Wang alongside two others for the Postgraduates' Choice Award; and Michael O'Sullivan alongside two others for The Exceptional Module Award

Towards a new regime for Data Protection in the EU

28 February 2013: Antonio Caselli (Italian Data Protection Autority) and Vera Pozzato (EU Data Protection Supervisor) discussed the law and challenges for data protection. They analysed the proposed new data protection regime in the EU, with a focus on cloud computing. The lectures were part of the Jean Monnet Module in EU Intellectual Property Law

Giuseppe Mazziotti (CEPS, Brussels): The Politics of EU Copyright Law

The seminar of 5 December 2012 shed light on the political processes that led to the enactment of current copyright rules at EU level, as well as to the idea of a Digital Single Market into the domain of creative content. Giuseppe Mazziotti is chairman of CEPS's multi-stakeholder task force on digital copyright.

Dr Peter Petkoff appointed Legal Consultant on Media Law for the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe

In his new role Dr Petkoff will be r reviewing Media Freedom and Freedom of Expression legislation in the OSCE area and its complians with international standards and OSCE commitments.

Grant from the European Commission's Jean Monnet Programme for LLM teaching

A three-years grant from the European Commission has been secured by Brunel Law School to run the Jean Monnet master module on European Intellectual Property Law. The module is offered to all LLM students in the commercial law area.
