Launched in June 2005, the Athena SWAN charter recognises and celebrates good employment practices for women working in Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths and Medicine (STEMM) in higher education and research. It aims to assist the recruitment, retention and promotion of women in STEMM and promote good practice. In September 2014, the Mathematics department received a bronze Athena SWAN award. The award was presented by Professor Dame Julia Higgins to Dr Veronica Vinciotti at a ceremony at Robinson College, University of Cambridge, on the 6th of November.
The Mathematics Department at Brunel University London is a supporter of the LMS Good Practice Scheme for advancing women's careers in university mathematics departments.
