Dr. Pamela Abbott has been successful in obtaining a research grant valued at €70,000 under the sponsorship of two French institutions: CIGREF Foundation and the Sophia-Antipolis Foundation.

Professor Hua Zhao’s election to SAE Fellowship

Professor Hua Zhao, Head of the Mechanical Engineering in the School of Engineering and Design, has been elected SAE fellow in October 2011. SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) International is a US based global association that serves more than 129,000 engineers and related technical experts from the aerospace, automotive and commercial-vehicle industries.

Delegates from the 4th successful ESAB  “developing excellence” workshop held in the School from 12 – 16 September 2011.  In October 2009, a £200+k contract for CPD was awarded to Brunel by ESAB, an international supplier of welding and cutting products.

Higher salaries for Placement Graduates

A recent report written by Brunel’s Professional Development Centre has found that graduates who have undertaken a professional placement will on average find employment more rapidly and earn more as their starting salary than their peers from three-year courses.

Online petitioning and local government democracy – a slow burner?

Within the broader debate of online engagement in local government democracy, English local authorities were required by December 2010 to offer an online space where the public would be enabled to petition the authority. Almost three months after this deadline, the first comprehensive national overview of local e-petitioning tools has found that the development, use and promotion of those facilities on English council websites is extremely low, with most available facilities as yet unused.
