"I will forever be thankful to Brunel for housing such an excellent placement course - the extra years have been worth it!"

Our undergraduate programmes offer a number of exciting student placements.

Professional Placements

We have been offering a work placement scheme for many years, which is a unique feature of our four year (thin sandwich) Undergraduate programmes.

Our students participate in two work placements which offer excellent opportunities to enhance existing skills by gaining real experience in the workplace. Through problem solving, teamwork, learning and performance placements are geared to develop the sort of personal and social skills you will require once you leave university. They also enable you to gain hands on knowledge about careers and occupations you might be interested.

Placements give you a competitive edge when you enter the job market. The benefits of doing a placement are that they:

  • Provide an excellent way to make contacts
  • Increase your employability potential
  • Inform your career choices
  • Significantly reduced fees for placement year

Placements do not have to be close to Brunel University or even London. In fact, they can be undertaken anywhere in the UK, or sometimes even in another country. Our students have gained vital work experience in the media indsutries. Some recent placement examples are:

  • Cartoon Network
  • IMG Media
  • Sweet Images
  • The Walt Disney Company

While on placement, academic visits are organised to ensure the smooth running of the student’s placement and help in keeping the link with academic studies. The award-winning Professional Development Centre (PDC) is on hand to give advice from writing your CV for potential employers to helping you find your ideal placement. The PDC specifically aims to deliver high quality guidance, information, careers education, work placement and recruitment services and to support the University in developing confident, talented and versatile graduates.

If you are unsure about taking a four year (thin sandwich) degree, you may study the three year programme and defer your decision until the second term of Level one studies.

Study Abroad: International Exchange Scheme with Partner Institutions

In today’s globalized world, having the cultural experience of living abroad will give you an advantage in the job market. We offer the opportunity to spend one term studying with one of our partner institutions – these can vary from year to year but have included institutions in the US, Denmark and Germany.

"Brunel is ideally placed for gaining experience in the media industry, with most major film and TV companies located in West London. I have benefitted from this by taking one of my placements at Europe’s leading sports broadcaster, IMG Media, which is only ten minutes from Brunel’s campus.

At IMG I have been involved in many aspects of their sports broadcasting, working on the football Premier League and programmes for the UFC. I was involved in the preparation of the shows as well as looking after the crew once we were on air. Through this work, I have also become involved with one of the biggest news channels in the Middle East, Alaraby Television, who are based at IMG Studios, helping them with filming across the UK and Europe. The experience has been really exciting and has challenged me to do my best work, and confirmed my dreams of working in broadcasting once I graduate."

"For me, choosing the placement option at Brunel was a no-brainer due to the university’s reputation for its thin sandwich course and high-profile links to the industry. I was instantly drawn to the opportunity of taking on two separate work placements in between my studies.

I loved my time at my first placement, Sweet Images, which is a post-production company based in London. Despite this being my first job in the industry, I was trusted to produce content for their clients, allowing me to gain a real insight into the media industry which is something a lecture alone would be unable to achieve.

After receiving a solid introduction to the media working world, I was in an ideal position to broaden and develop my skill set with my second placement and my tutor put me in touch with Cartoon Network, where I worked for three months as on On-Air Creative Intern. Though the course allows for two placements, I was fortunate enough to do an extra one at The Walt Disney Company. Eager to learn more about the promotions side of children's television, I worked for a year as a Creative Intern for the channels, creating digital content for the YouTube pages and promos for on-air that were broadcasted in various parts of the world.

All three placements have allowed me to apply the theory learned in lectures and the practical aspects of the media modules to an active working environment. It has helped me to grow as a media student, realising that I have an ever-growing passion for editing, whilst the networking opportunities have led me to gather the connections necessary to pursue a career in the media after I graduate.

I would encourage anyone wanting to do a media course to consider applying for the thin sandwich option as it has confirmed where my media interests lie and now, I am taking everything I have learned into my final year at uni, ready to face whatever the course will throw at me. I will forever be thankful to Brunel for housing such an excellent placement course - the extra years have been worth it!"
