Our Department is an interdisciplinary centre that includes researchers with a range of backgrounds including computer science, engineering, mathematics, and psychology. We carry out rigorous world-leading applied research in a range of related topics including software engineering, intelligent data analysis, human computer interaction, information systems, and systems biology. Much of our research relates to two main domains: healthcare/biomedical informatics and digital economy/business. We have long-standing fruitful collaborations with many user organisations and we publish in top journals, including over 60 papers in IEEE/ACM Transactions between 2008-2013. In the 2014 REF, 65% of our research was rated as internationally excellent or world leading.
Our College hosts four research centres:
Big Data Analytics
Autonomous Systems and Robotics
Brunel Automotive Hub
These centres and groups provide interdisciplinary, collaborative and cross-cutting research platforms. These platforms support and complement our work on global challenges in health, environment, energy and manufacturing.
Brunel Software Engineering Lab
Digital Economy Research Group
Intelligent Data Analysis Research Group
Interactive Multimedia Systems Research Group
Modelling & Simulation Group
Many of our academics are also members of the following institutes:
Institute of Energy Futures
Institute of Materials and Manufacturing
Secure your future with a PhD from one of the UK's leading Computer Science departments where you will work with leading researchers (65% of our research was rated Internationally Excellent/World Leading in the last REF). Areas of expertise include:
- Intelligent Data Analysis
- Software Engineering
- Human-Computer Interaction
- Interactive Multimedia Systems
- Modelling & Simulation
- Information Systems
- Systems and Synthetic Biology
We have one of the largest PhD cohorts in the country. Brunel has invested heavily to enhance research students’ experience, including research methods courses and seminars in the department, skills training at the Brunel Graduate School, provision of PhD bursaries, funding for attending conferences, away-days, and workshops.
Research students have access to office space and computers, and are integrated into the Department’s research groups. As the next generation of research leaders, our PhDs have published in many highly-regarded international conferences and journals and have won many awards. After graduation, they are making significant contributions to academic and industrial institutions all over the world.
