The Professional Development Centre
The PDC provides a high quality service that acts to benefit students, alumni and employers by supporting the university in developing confident, talented and versatile graduates. The award winning centre assists in career planning and provides resources and workshops to assist students in honing the skills that will make them employable post graduation. The PDC’s links with employers also enables them to create invaluable networking opportunities at careers fairs and workshops, where industry experts are on hand to give knowledgeable and career specific advice.
The Job Shop (a section of the PDC) assists students in finding part-time and vacation work to fit around their degree, so that they can gain paid experience.
We pioneer sandwich placement schemes, proven to produce better quality and more successful graduates, which are offered by almost all academic schools.

Some schools integrate career advice into their degree programmes in the form of work experience modules, career planning days and networking opportunities.
Volunteering on campus
There are countless opportunities to get involved in volunteering on campus. Students can work at the student union, become a mentor, enrol in an ambassador scheme, get involved in the student newspaper or radio station and much more.
Along with hard work, practical skills and commitment, we promote creativity and a business spirit. The entrepreneurship society – Brunel Entrepreneurs – is run by students and attracts external speakers from all across the business spectrum for debates and workshops. There is a wide range of other societies that students can get involved in, whether that’s by helping to run them, participating in events and socials or starting their own.
What is Employability?
We understand that when you’re paying a lot of money to come to university, you’re likely to be to thinking about the kind of job you might get when you graduate and how much you might earn – your ‘employability’. You think about your university degree as an investment and you want to know whether or not it will provide you with value for money.
This is what we’ve been thinking about too, and so at Brunel University London we offer the courses, support and environment in which you can learn, develop and succeed in your degree – and in whatever you choose to do when you graduate.

The Brunel view of Employability
Brunel University London has a distinguished history as a pioneer in providing work experience within our degree programmes, either through placements in industry or through strong relationships with business. Our mission also explicitly recognises our role in providing society with talented and versatile graduates. The fact that Brunel has focussed on what is now known as employability for over 50 years perhaps helps to explain why Brunel graduates tend to be successful in the job market and are more likely to earn higher starting salaries than graduates of many other Universities. However at Brunel we passionately believe that employability is about so much more than this. For instance, it is about realising your potential, whether that is in industry, the arts or providing an essential service to society at large. “One size” definitely does not “fit all”.
Today’s employers are naturally looking for potential leaders who can analyse, plan, organise and demonstrate an awareness of commerce and the customer. But equally they are looking for enthusiasm, drive, flexibility and for well rounded individuals who can demonstrate values such as responsibility, respect and integrity. Many of these skills are built in to our degree programmes. Some can be developed by our award-winning Professional Development Centre, and still more can be acquired through participating in the exciting and rewarding range of volunteering and mentoring activities available both on and off campus.
