Brunel Integrated PhD (New Route PhD) - Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering research within the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace & Civil Engineering has an excellent track record and an international reputation. Staff generate numerous publications, conference presentations and patents and have links with a wide range of institutions, both within and outside the UK. The School therefore benefits from research collaboration with numerous outside organisations, including teaching hospitals, several governmental laboratories (including the National Physical Laboratory, Transport Research Laboratory and the Building Research Establishment), and universities in the UK, Europe and as far afield as China, Japan, Brazil, Egypt and Turkey. Close links are also maintained with numerous commercial concerns, including the Ford Motor Company, SKF and British Petroleum.

The  Department of Mechanical, Aerospace & Civil Engineering has extensive and well-equipped laboratories, with particular areas of strength in fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, engine testing, vibrations, environmental engineering, tribology, biomedical engineering and structural testing. There are comprehensive computing resources within the College in addition to those offered centrally by the University. Advanced software is available for finite and boundary element modelling of structures, finite volume modelling of flows, and for the simulation of varied control systems, flow machines, combustion engines, suspensions, and other systems of interest to the research groups.

Your taught programme will promote critical analysis, independence of thought, an awareness of broader issues which create an impact on the environment of research and an understanding of subject-specific knowledge at the forefront of your discipline. The taught element will cover generic and research skills and discipline-specific modules as follows:
