Year 12 University Taster Day

Our taster day for Year 12 sixth form students is held at Brunel University in Uxbridge and is designed to give students an insight into university life before making their UCAS application.
It is a great opportunity to help students with their university research and get some hands on experience of what a particular degree course involves.
Students will get the opportunity to:
- Attend a taster session in their chosen course/subject area
- Meet staff and current students
- Tour the campus and view on-campus accommodation
- Find out more about graduate destinations
- Ask questions about their course interests, entry requirements etc

Students should arrive for 10.30am and will be finished by 3.30pm.

| Biomedical Sciences | This practical session will cover aspects of human anatomy, histology and general molecular biology. We will demonstrate some specific aspects of anatomy and histology with concrete examples and we will provide some insight into standard lab techniques for medical, forensics and other research labs. These will include separation of DNA fragments by agarose gel electrophoresis with explanation of where this is needed. |
| Business | Networking – a key skills for business success Facebook. Twitter. Social networking sites generally help you build up your social network. In the world of business you need to have a business network that is broader and deeper than your social network. But how do you build a network with people you have never met before? What do you say to a stranger that will make them take an interest in you? In a business environment, why should someone share with you their contact details? These and other questions that lead to effective networking will be covered in this session. Moreover, you will get a chance to practice your networking skills. And there is a competition to find the best networker on the day. Remember it’s not what you know but who you know that counts! |
| Computing/Computer Science | An introductory lecture to computing followed by a practical workshop where you will be introduced to programming using our Finch robots. |
| Contemporary Education | We will begin this session by highlighting some of the current 'hot topics' in education. These include disagreements about the best kind of pre-school education, the replacement of the GCSE by the EBac, worries surrounding young people in the 'NEET' (Not in Employment, Education or Training) category and the value of a university degree. In groups, working with a tutor, you will then gather evidence about a contemporary educational issue. We will help you to develop a short presentation and to prepare for questions. The session will help you to understand why education is such a controversial and 'political' theme and encourage you to form judgements based on data and research findings. |
| Economics and Finance | Economics and Finance – exciting aspects, and the Bloomberg advantage. Introductory lecture on the study of Economics and Finance at Brunel – the different exciting areas within the discipline, and some issues of topical and contemporary interest. Demonstration of Bloomberg – The Bloomberg terminal is a computer system that enables professionals in finance and economics to analyse financial market data and much more. At Brunel, faculty and students can readily use this very advanced, world-recognised, and efficient system for undertaking their research. |
| Law | Your opportunity to participate in one of our induction workshops that inspired the BAFTA award winning BBC 2 series “How to Start your own Country”. |
| Maths | Maths Awareness Day Have you ever wondered what maths is actually useful for? Well, if so come to this presentation and find out. We will look at several applications, take a glimpse at the many career opportunities mathematics offers, and then finish with an example showing how ‘seemingly useless’ mathematics gets used every day by millions of people. After this you'll never think of maths in the same way again! |
| Occupational Therapy (OT) | Mini-lecture with practical activity: how OT’s apply Anatomy and Physiology to a client condition and how and why OT use group activity for clients. |
| Physiotherapy | What is Physio – how to make a successful application (am). Taster session (pm) - Interactive session where students will have the opportunity to participate in a teaching session to learn about balance, how to assess a knee or electrical stimulation etc. Due to time constraints a visitor will sample one of the taster scenarios and will be randomly assigned to a session. |
| Politics and History | 'Don't tell if you're extreme: Political information processing and electoral success' and 'How Germany started the First World War, lost the war, and then claimed it was the victim afterwards at Versailles' In these lecture-workshops two academics will go through university-style lectures, one on history, the other on politics, examining the First World War in history and the politics of voting and elections. |
| Psychology | Two Sides of the Same Coin: Psychology as a Social Science, Psychology as a Biological Science Following an introductory talk, students will hear a “What is Social Psychology?” talk covering Psychology as a social science. Students will then have the opportunity to learn about Psychology as a biological science by participating in optional, small-group sessions involving laboratory demonstrations and research. |
| Sport Sciences | Introduction to Sport Sciences followed by a choice of sessions in Physiology, Biomechanics, Sport Psychology, Health and Performance Analysis. |
| Social Work | Being the difference: This workshop will introduce participants to Social Work, its core values, aims and contexts for practice and outline the BA Social Work course at Brunel. The second part of the program will involve working on case scenarios and practicing some introductory communication skills. |
| Sociology and Media/Communications Studies | Sociology and Media today: In this mini lecture, a topical issue will be discussed. The lecture will appeal to both those interested in Sociology and Media/Communications. Students will be asked to reflect on key themes and think critically about the issues involved and their relevance to society today. |
| Theatre | A Performer Prepares: introduction to skills for acting and performance. This course is a great opportunity to get a taste of the wide range of skills you will learn studying drama in Higher Education. In this practical workshop you will learn skills in acting, movement and performance making. You will work with specialist tutors who will introduce you to a range of performance forms, styles and techniques from around the world. Please come prepared with loose, comfortable clothing. |
