Waiting to Hear From Us

How we come to a decision based on your application

We base our decision on your application as a whole.

First and foremost we check that your predicted (or achieved) grades are in line with our entry requirements for the course you have applied for. We then look at your personal statement and your reference to gain a better understanding of you as a person in terms of your suitability for your course, and we assess this in conjunction with your grades. We also look at your GCSE grades and further information about our requirements can be found on our entry requirements page.

Taking all of these components into consideration, we will then be able to decide whether or not we are able to make you an offer.

Our offer to you

At undergraduate level there are two types of offer you can receive: a conditional offer or an unconditional offer.

Conditional offers

Most applicants will have to achieve a certain number of UCAS tariff points and/or certain grades before they can take up their place, and conditions will be set (for example for GCE A- or AS-level subject grades).

Self-financing students may be asked to provide financial guarantees.

Unconditional offers

Some applicants who have already received their qualifications and therefore have enough UCAS points to satisfy the entry criteria for their chosen course could be made an offer of a definite place.

Unsuccessful applications

Some applicants may find their application to us will be unsuccessful. This unfortunately means that a place cannot be offered to you based on all of the information provided in your application.

Change of course offers

Applicants applying to study Engineering or Information Systems and Mathematics courses may find that their application is instead considered for either our Foundations of Engineering or Foundations of Information Technology year. This occurs if the applicant has a strong application but does not meet the entry criteria for the course to which they have applied.

For example, an applicant applying for a Civil Engineering degree may be offered a place on a Foundations of Engineering year if it is deemed that he or she does not/will not have all of the required grades for Level 1 of the degree, but will fulfil the entry criteria for the Foundations year.

Applicants for other courses may also find that they have been offered a place on a slightly different degree course to the one they applied for, if they do not meet the entry requirements for their chosen course.

How long will it take for us to assess your application?

We aim to make a decision on all applications within 28 days, however this may take longer at peak times of the year (January to March), particularly if your application did not supply sufficient information or if you are applying to a course that requires an interview.
