Ford Blue Oval Scholarships
Available from September 2012 entry.
Meeting the eligibility criteria does not equate to an entitlement to a scholarship.
1. Scholarship Details
Value: £10,000
How many: 10, distributed between students on the following programmes:
- Product Design / Industrial Design & Technology / Product Design Engineering
- Electronic and Computer Engineering /Electronic and Communication Engineering/Electronic and Electrical Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering with Automotive Design/Motorsport Engineering
- Computer Science
Annual amount: £3,000 in years 1 and 2 and £4,000 in year 3 for a full time programme or £3,000 in years 1, 2 and 4 and £1,000 in year 3 for a sandwich course.
Application process: eligible applicants submitting their UCAS application prior to 15th January deadline, and who are made an offer to study at Brunel, will be considered for an award in early September.
2. Eligibility
Eligibility criteria are reviewed annually.
To be eligible for consideration of an Ford Blue Oval scholarship, a student
- must have an offer of admission for one of the following programmes of study:
- Product Design
- Product Design Engineering
- Industrial Design and Technology
- Computer Science
- Electronic and Electrical Engineering
- Electronic and Computer Engineering
- Electronic and Communication Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering with Automotive Design
- Motorsport Engineering
- must achieve one of the following qualifications and grades*:
- 3 A levels with grades AAB or above
- International Baccalaureate Diploma with 34 points or above
- 3 Scottish Advanced Highers with grades AAB or above
- Higher Irish Leaving Certificate from 4 subjects with grades A1, A1, A1, A1
- BTEC Extended Diploma with grades D*D*D*
- must make Brunel University their firm choice through UCAS
- must be eligible to pay Home fees i.e. not international
- must agree to take part in any publicity activities required by Ford across the Scholarship duration
*qualifying grades must be in the subjects expressed in the offer of admission
Where too many applicants meet all the eligibility criteria, additionally, consideration will be given to applicants who meet the following under-represented criteria:
- Care leaver
- Low participation neighbourhoods
- Mature
- Low income
- Disability
- Low socio economic group
- Parents without an HE qualification
The following are not eligible to be considered for a Ford Blue Oval scholarship:
- those studying for a qualification that is the equivalent level, or lower than, one already attained, including non-UK qualifications
- those who are part of any other scholarship programme run by another commercial organisation for the purposes of higher education
- students who pay overseas or Island fees
- UK students who are not permanently resident in UK
- students who transfer from another institution
- those on the final year of the MEng (where a partial fee waiver will be applied)
- students undertaking a postgraduate qualification
2.1 Eligibility Definitions

Low income |
Those with an annual residual household income of less than £25,000. [Residual income is the household income before tax and after any pension contributions or allowances for dependent children.] For full time students, a full financial assessment must have been carried out by Student Finance England and agreement must have been given by the student to share this data. This assessment must have been completed at the time of scholarship allocation or confirmation of conditional scholarships in early September and it is the responsibility of the student to ensure this has been completed by the Student Loans Company. For part time students, evidence of income must be presented to the University for verification of eligibility. |

Low socio economic group |
Those who belong to the following socio economic groups: 4 Small employers and own account workers 5 Lower supervisory and technical occupations 6 Semi-routine occupations 7 Routine occupations 8 Never worked and long-term unemployed |

Care Leavers |
Those who have spent at least 3 months in care (and declared this on their UCAS application form) including at the time of their 16th birthday |

Disabled |
Those who declare a disability on their UCAS application and this has been verified by the University’s Disability and Dyslexia Service |

Mature |
Those who are at least 21 years of age at the start of their course |

Low participation neighbourhoods |

Parents without an HE qualification |
Those whose parents or step-parents or guardians have no higher education qualifications, such as a degree, diploma or certificate of higher education, and this has been declared on their UCAS application |
2.2 Proof of Eligibility
- Data will be collected from the UCAS application forms for information on low socio economic groups, age, low participation neighbourhoods, and parents who do not have a higher education qualification.
- For "care leaver", evidence of care leaver status, in the form of written documentations from the student’s local authority (corporate parent) will be required before any payment can be made.
- For "low income", full time students must have provided Student Finance England with sufficient information to enable a full financial assessment to have been carried out prior to the allocation of scholarships in early September, and consented to share this data. Brunel University will use the result of that assessment to confirm “low income” eligibility. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that the Student Loan Company have fully carried out the income assessment prior to scholarships being allocated or confirmed in early September.
- Evidence of Disability Support Allowance will be required before any payment can be made
3. Allocation
3.1 Consideration for Ford Blue Oval scholarship will be made in September. Allocation will start with those with the highest grades. Where more students have the same grade profile than there are scholarships available, the under-represented criteria will be taken into consideration, using the following weightings:

3.2 Students are considered for scholarships at the time of their application only and cannot be considered should their circumstances change during the course of their studies. Scholarships cannot be backdated.
3.3 Scholarships will be allocated in the same academic year as a course application is received.
3.4 Students may only be awarded one scholarship, with the exception of the Placement Scholarship which can be awarded alongside one of the other scholarships and/or other placement bursary provision. If a student is eligible for more than one scholarship, s/he will be awarded the one which will be the most financially beneficial across the full course duration.
3.5 The decision of the allocation panel is final
4 Scholarship Payment
4.1 Students can elect to use the amount of the award from one of the following options:
(a) A fee waiver
(b) A discount on the cost of on-campus accommodation
(c) A cash award
Successfully awarded students will be sent a scholarship payment selection task via eVision in early September; students must confirm their payment selection by no later than 1 October. Students who do not return the completed payment selection task by 1 October will automatically be recorded to receive the cash option. You will be asked to supply relevant bank account details to support receipt of the cash option.
Where a student has applied for tuition fee loan funding the Student Loan Company will be notified of any selected tuition fee waiver(s) in early September.
Payment dates for all scholarship awards (where relevant) will be:
- 1st Payment - second week of December
- 2nd Payment - first week of March
- 3rd Payment - second week of June
4.2 All scholarship payments, discounts and fee waivers will only be made providing:
- the student is enrolled at the University on an undergraduate degree programme of study at the time of the payment
- the student progresses to the next level of study with no compulsory retrievals [scholarship payment will be made where optional retrievals are taken or where compulsory retrievals have accepted recorded mitigating circumstances.
NB: Where cash payments form part of the scholarship, this will be made direct to a UK bank account
5. Withdrawal of a Scholarship
5.1 The University reserves the right to withdraw a scholarship from anyone who is found to have misled the University about any aspect of their eligibility and to seek repayment of any monies already paid by appropriate means.
5.2 If a student changes to a programme of study which is not part of the Ford Blue Oval Scholarship scheme, the scholarship will be withdrawn
5.3 Where a student is awarded a Placement Scholarship and subsequently changes from a sandwich mode of study to full time, the Placement Scholarship will be withdrawn.
5.4 If a student takes a period of temporary withdrawal or withdraws from the course completely, the University reserves the right to seek repayment of any parts of scholarship award already made. This includes tuition fee waivers, accommodation discounts and/or any cash payments received.
5.5 Students who withdraw before the end of the academic year may be asked to repay part of their scholarship. This includes tuition fee waivers, accommodation discounts and/or any cash payments received
5.6 Should FORD terminate this award then the associated student funding would be withdrawn.
