Local Boroughs Scholarships

The Local Boroughs Scholarships will be awarded to 20 students in 2012, who attended a maintained school or college in one of the six London Boroughs with whom the University operates Widening Participation Partnerships. Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic excellence and to students who meet certain criteria.

Annual Value: £5,000 fee waiver plus £1,000 taken either as:

(a) an additional fee waiver or
(b) discount on the cost of on-campus accommodation or
(c) a cash award

How many: 20* new entrants each year
For how many years: 3-years (subject to meeting progression criteria)

*Increasing to 30 from 2013

Application

Eligible applicants submitting their UCAS application prior to 15January deadline, and who are made an offer to study at Brunel, will be given access to an online scholarship application form which must be completed and submitted by 10 March. Successful students will be informed in early September, following confirmation of eligibility. Scholarship applications received after 10 March may be considered in September for any remaining unallocated scholarships.

Eligibility (Eligibility criteria are reviewed annually)

To be eligible for consideration of a Local Boroughs Scholarship, a student must:

  • achieve a minimum of 360 UCAS tariff points in total (excluding Key Skills);
  • have attended a maintained school or college in one of the six London Boroughs with whom the University operates Widening Participation Partnerships: Brent, Ealing, Hammersmith and Fulham, Harrow, Hillingdon and Hounslow;
  • meet at least one of the following under-represented criteria;
    • be a care leaver
    • come from a low participation neighbourhood
    • be a mature student aged 21 or above at the start of their course
    • have an assessed household income of £25,000 or less
    • have a disability (including dyslexia)
    • come from a low socio-economic background
    • parents do not have a higher education qualification
  • be an ordinarily resident in England (excludes those living in Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland, EU or Overseas Territories, Gibraltar);
  • be eligible to receive a tuition fee loan from Student Finance England and have consented to the sharing of data submitted to the Student Loans Company;
  • have made Brunel University their firm choice through UCAS by 9 May;
  • have submitted a completed scholarship application by 10 March.
