Integrated Pollution (IE 5508) – 30 credits

Delivered by the Institute for the Environment, throughout terms 1 and 2 (approximately 3 hrs/week for 24 weeks).

Main aims of the module:

  • To study fundamental scientific aspects of environmental pollution with emphasis on an integrated approach to environmental pollution and control and to study the environmental and technological issues in the management and control of water, air and land pollution

  • Bioindicators and Environmental Monitoring
  • Organics and Heavy Metals in the Environment
  • Pollution Abatement Technologies
  • Waste Handling and Treatment - Trade/Industrial Effluent and Municipal Wastewater Treatment and Sludge Management
  • Contaminated Soil and Sediment Management

Learning activities:
Lectures, workshops, industry lectures and site visits

Assessment:
There is an examination which accounts for 30% of the overall assessment and coursework (70%). An indicative content of the coursework assessment includes a group project of 4000 words, a waste management report, which may link to activities such as a site visit of 2000 words and an oral presentation.
