Sustainable Development in Practice (IE5516) – 15 credits
Principles of Sustainable Development: Energy in Transport and Industry (IE5516) – 15 credits
Delivered by the Institute for the Environment, this module runs in term 2 (approximately 2 hrs/week for 12 weeks).
Main aims of the module:
The key aim of this module is to develop the skills required to analyse, research and tackle sustainable development problems. This is achieved via a series of group projects that illustrate the complex interplay of environmental, societal and economic implications for a range of stakeholders in real sustainable development case studies. Developing the process of personal review, reflection and development is the second major aim of the module.
Main topics of study:
The case studies will be based on current, real-life problems that have no "right" answer. Your team's job is to analyse the problem and develop creative solutions that address that problem whilst taking into account the impact on different stakeholders.
Potential case study themes will fall into the following areas: 1) climate change impacts, 2) food, 3) transport, 4) infrastructure, 5) water, 6) pollution, 7) risk, 8) fuel, 9) health, 10) emissions.
Learning activities:
Problem based learning group meetings and introductory lectures.
Assessment methods:
3 Coursework Assignments:
2 assessed group reports on the final two case studies;
an individual reflective report that examines your own learning on the processes, development and implementation of sustainable sollutions.
