Water Conservation Bursary

Every year IfE offers a £4,000 scholarship to one of our students. Students wishing to apply for the bursary should, in addition to following the formal procedure for applying for the Masters course, prepare a 500 word essay or report that clearly indicates their interest in environmental issues related to water. This is open to students on the following courses:

The essay may also contain information on ideas that the candidate has in relation to their dissertation topic, as successful applicants will be required to undertake a dissertation project that is focussed on issues related to water.

In years that have a particularly strong set of applications we may offer two £2,000 scholarships instead of one £4,000.

See bursary scheme details for 2015 (PDF).

Criteria for the selection of the successful candidate

No applications for the bursary will be considered unless a Brunel University London application form has been completed, and an offer of a place (conditional or unconditional) made to the candidate by the deadline below. The application should demonstrate

  • An interest in, and understanding of, issues related to water, which may be demonstrated through previous studies, membership of organisations or voluntary groups
  • An ability to communicate effectively, at an appropriate academic level. This should include appropriate references to the literature

The award is funded by The Worshipful Company of Water Conservators, a Livery Company of the City of London. The company has particular interest in issues related to the River Thames and London, and although it is not a requirement that candidates have a specific interest in this location, candidates with particular experience, or ideas for dissertation topics which are of particular relevance, may have an advantage.

As a condition of the award, the successful candidate must undertake a dissertation in a topic related to water. It is also expected that those awarded bursaries will attend a luncheon as a guest of the Water Conservators and possibly present their work to the sponsors.

Submission and deadline

The deadline for 2015/16 is Tuesday 1 September 2015. The successful candidate(s) will be notified by writing during September 2015. Applications should be sent to:
