Beginners' French (class 1)

French is spoken by around 65-80 million people worldwide as a maternal language, and by between 190-200 million people as a secondary language. It is an official language in 29 countries and is the third most widely spoken language in the European Union. French is seen in the UK as the language of culture (many 'posh' English words have their origins in French, a legacy of the Norman invasion of 1066) and is one of the languages most widely taught in UK schools, meaning many English people have a smattering of French.

About your teacher:

Pascale McFadden

I am from Bordeaux in the south-west of France. I studied Philosophy and Languages before moving to the UK where I studied for my teaching qualifications with Greenwich University. I have taught French at all levels and worked with various London institutions and companies such as Kodak, BAA and SITA.

I am very enthusiastic about teaching my language and the culture of my country. In my lessons, I make extensive use of authentic materials from the internet mixed with other audio-visual resources with the aim of creating a positive and motivating learning environment. My teaching is based on the communicative approach which engages my students in meaningful activities and encourages the use of the target language right from the start. I find it rewarding to see them gain confidence in their new language skills.
