I wanted to improve my English so I wouldn’t struggle during my BEng Electronic Engineering degree. At Brunel University, I have a lot of classes on presentation, grammar and social skills. These improve my vocabulary and how I deal with people. You learn how to use phrases and to improve your skills in your daily life. As most people in my class don’t speak the same language we are forced to speak in English. I’ve improved my vocabulary so much and I’m much more confident about talking in English. Before I was very shy. Right now we are working on a presentation about the degree we are going to do after the English language course. I think this will help us. I’m going to talk about electronic tablets such as the iPad and what they might be like in five years’ time. If you want to learn English, it’s better to live in a city where most of the people speak it. In your own country you can’t practise your English that much but here you can practise English everywhere. The classes here are amazing. I think it’s better to take English classes in the UK. Most pupils in Kurdistan have little experience with English so we need to study to improve our language before we start our academic courses. It’s part of the requirements to get on to the academic courses. The course at Brunel University focuses on academic English, especially writing and research. We didn’t learn how to do this in my home country. Every week we have to write an essay about a specific subject and the teacher will check it and tell us whether there are any grammatical errors or other problems. Teachers use PowerPoint and focus on giving us practice. We have to speak English in class because there are a lot of other international students so it’s better learning English in the UK. It’s also good to be living in the country while I try to speak the language. I live with nine flatmates and we speak English to each other in too. I am very satisfied with the course. My English has improved. It would have been hard to start my LLM (Master of Laws) without taking an English course. I would encourage people to come to study English in the UK.
