Pre-Sessional English

Overview

The Pre-sessional English course has been designed to provide you with intensive English language support before the start of your academic studies at Brunel.  We provide a friendly and supportive learning environment, in which you will have the opportunity to improve your language skills, make friends and settle into life at Brunel and the UK.

If you have already met the English requirements for your academic programme but you would still like to attend a short course to ensure you are fully prepared for academic life, we offer a 3-week pre-sessional course that has been specifically designed to meet your requirements.

 

Course Features

  • Study only as long as you need to, with a range of courses from 3-20 weeks
  • Small class sizes, maximum 14 in a class
  • Classes focus on key academic English skills to prepare you for success in your studies at Brunel
  • A fun social programme, which includes weekly events on campus and to popular UK destinations
  • English language test at the end of the programme
  • Visa support at the end of your programme

Course Content & Assessment

This course focuses on improving your academic English skills. Classes will include modules on:

  • Research Skills and Academic Writing
  • Presentation Skills
  • Listening and Note-taking
  • Seminar Skills
  • Grammar and Vocabulary Development

The Pre-sessional course is a full-time programme and comprises of 20 hours classroom study per week

Course Assessement

At the end of the programme, all students following the Pre-sessional programme will sit the Brunel English Language Test BrunELT. You will be tested on your writing, reading, speaking and listening skills and will receive a score for each component as well as an overall score.

Progression onto Future Studies

Passing the course and receiving a sufficient mark in the BrunELT will meet the English language requirements for your main course. You will usually not need to take any other English Tests.

 * Please note this is just a guide, and the course we recommend will depend on the academic course you have applied for and the individual scores of your English qualification (all academic courses require a minimum of at least 5.5 in all sub-scores to satisfy UKBA requirements) for more information on which course is right for you please contact IPLC.

All Pre-Sessional courses end on the 13th of September 2013 and successful completion allows for direct progression onto your Brunel academic course.  Please note the minimum age for all IPLC courses is 17.

To apply for a Pre-sessional course you must first have:

  • Applied for your main academic course
  • Taken a recognised English qualification, such as IELTS or TOEFL
  • Checked to see which Pre-sessional course is suitable for you
