Set Up

Please select whether you have a Windows Operating System (Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7) or a Macintosh Operating System (Mac OS X)

Software Notes

Web Browser

Certified & Supported versions

Internet Explorer: 7

Firefox: 1.5, 2.0

Chrome: Not supported.

 

 

Internet Explorer

Unsure of your browser version?

  • Open your browser.
  • From the menu bar select Help.
  • Select About Internet Explorer.

Adding u-Link to your “Allowed”/“Trusted Sites”

From the menu bar select Tools.
Select Internet Options …
Click on the second tab, Security.
Click on Trusted Sites, followed by Sites…
Uncheck the box labelled Require service verification (https:) for all sites in this zone.
Enter *.brunel.ac.uk and then click Add.
Click OK.
Under Security level for this zone, move the slider to Medium Low.

Click OK.

Firefox

For students with u-Link problems, please use Firefox as it is generally fasters at running u-Link.

Adding u-Link to your “Allowed”/“Trusted Sites”

From the menu bar select Tools.
Select Options…
Click on the Web Features tab.
Click the first Allowed Sites button.
Enter *.brunel.ac.uk and then click Allow.

Click OK, followed by OK

If you are using Firefox 3.0.x, please follow the instructions below -

From the menu bar select Tools.
Select Options…
Select the Content Tab
Click on Exceptions

Enter *.brunel.ac.uk and then click Allow.

Google Chrome

Click on the 'Tools' icon on the top right.
Click on Options
Click the Under the Bonnet Tab>
Click on Content Settings
Select the Pop Ups option
Click on Add....

Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
Certified & Supported versions: 1.4.2_x, 1.5.0_04 and higher, 1.6.0_xx

You can find out which JRE version you are using at: http://www.javatester.org/version.html

Microsoft Office

If you have Office 2003 and need to view 2007 documents, you must download and install the free viewers are available at (scroll down to Compatibility Pack):

Adobe Reader

If you already have Adobe Reader installed or are still experiencing problems, you can try disabling viewing in the browser.

Click Start > All Programs > Adobe Reader.
From the menu, select Edit, then select
Preferences... Under Categories, select Internet.
Untick Display PDF in browser.
Click OK, then close Adobe Reader.

7-Zip More efficient that Win-Zip.

Windows Media Player

 
Lavasoft Ad-Aware / Spybot Search & Destroy

One of the first things you should do is to ensure that your computer is free of any spyware, or adware. These programs can install themselves without your knowledge and can interfere with the websites you visit – in addition, they can slow your computer down, and compromise your online security.

VLC Player A free Media player that plays any media file.

Disabled Users

This section of the Windows Set Up is only for disabled users. If you are having difficulties in using your screenreader software to access u-link please contact the Assistive Technology Adviser on assistive-technology@brunel.ac.uk.

Alternatively disabled students can make an appointment with the Assistive Technology Adviser through Disability and Dyslexia Service to go over how to use u-Link with your assistive technology. If you think there maybe a problem with u-Link itself then please report this contact u-Link Support via the Student Centre.

Mac Set Up

You need to check whether the software you are using is compatible with u-Link – please note that installation and troubleshooting queries regarding the below software should be sought from the software vendor, not the University.

Adding u-Link to your “Allowed”/“Trusted Sites”

From the Firefox menu, select Preferences
Click Web Features, followed by the Allowed Sites button next to Block Popup Windows
Enter weblearn.brunel.ac.uk and then click Allow

Click OK, and then OK again.
Apple Safari
Certified & Supported version: 3

From the Safari menu, ensure there is not tick next to Block Pop-up Windows.

Microsoft Office for Mac

Adobe Reader

If you already have Adobe Reader installed or are still experiencing problems, you can try disabling viewing in the browser.

Other popup blocking software

If you are using other software such as the Google Toolbar, Yahoo! Toolbar (etc) please refer to the software vendors site for instructions on how to allow popups on a specific site.
