BBC 100 Women

The BBC hosted an event at New Broadcasting House on Thursday 8 December 2016 to counter the fact that only 17% of profiles on Wikipedia are currently of women. This record-breaking event witnessed over 400 women-focused Wikipedia entries added to the site with several created by Brunel students themselves.

Speaking on the importance of promoting an equal gender presence on the web, Journalism student Elliot Lake stated that “activities like this highlight the fact that women are not given as many opportunities as they should be” with peers voicing a similar message on the necessity of using tools such as social networks and blogs to propagate messages of equality.

Our Journalism Newsroom also hosted its own edit-a-thon in association with BBC and Wikipedia on campus throughout the day, with BA Journalism students creating new entries about notable women that they have chosen to be profiled on Wikipedia.
