On December 5, 2012, BLS celebrated student participation in professional development short courses by awarding certificates to students who have actively engaged with the Pro Bono and Specialist Advocacy courses in the last academic year (2011-12), and to students who have already completed the Legal Professionals Masterclass this year (2012-13).

CIPL's first lecture of the Adjudicating International Disputes series was successfully delivered by Dr Matthew Parish (Chaired by Dr Faye Fangfei Wang)

CIPL's first guest lecture was successfully delivered by Dr Matthew Parish. It was well attended by about 40 PG students/staff. It gave us great inspiration for the role of the party-appointed arbitrator and the governmental intervention of regulating arbitration. Some students very actively participated in the debate and thought it was brilliant.

Brunel internal mooting competition finals at the UK Supreme Court

Brunel Law School has secured for its internal mooting competition finalists the rare opportunity to moot in the highest court in the land. The finals will take place on February 26, 2013, 5-6.30 pm. Another 40 Brunel Law School students will be given the chance to visit the court and be in the audience for the moot.

The 3rd edition of Sentencing and Punishment: The Quest for Justice was published by Oxford University Press in the summer. The authors, Dr Susan Easton and Professor Christine Piper, have also written a blog to explain why they chose the picture of a prison hulk at Woolwich in 1777.

Felicity Kaganas was invited to present a paper at Sussex University in October 2012. The two day seminar, ‘Celebrating twenty-one years of the Children Act’, was sponsored by the Modern Law Review and was attended by eminent academics and judges. Felicity Kaganas’ paper was entitled ‘Shared Parenting: A ‘Keep Out of Court’ Message’. All presentations can be heard on the website of the Sussex Centre for Responsibilities, Rights and the Law.

Dr Peter Petkoff appointed Legal Consultant on Media Law for the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe

In his new role Dr Petkoff will be r reviewing Media Freedom and Freedom of Expression legislation in the OSCE area and its complians with international standards and OSCE commitments.

Grant from the European Commission's Jean Monnet Programme for LLM teaching

A three-years grant from the European Commission has been secured by Brunel Law School to run the Jean Monnet master module on European Intellectual Property Law. The module is offered to all LLM students in the commercial law area.

Staff vs Students Football

Over the last few years a tradition has been created in the School, for our students and staff to face each other on the football pitch and basketball court. We continued with this tradition with our recent football match.

Christine Piper’s paper was entitled ‘Mediation and Vulnerable Parents’. Felicity Kaganas’ paper was entitled ‘Child Protection and the Modernised Family Justice System’. Both papers will be included as chapters in an edited collection, Vulnerabilities, Care and Family Law.

Brunel Law School launches part-time CPE route to widen access to the CPE/GDL course

BLS is launching a new part-time route to its CPE programme for 2012-2013. The course will run over two years. With fewer loans available for fees and many mature students needing to contnue work, this will make the course much more accessible.

Felicity Kaganas attended a seminar at Oxford University in July 2012 at which invited participants presented papers dealing with the research they were undertaking at the time. She presented a paper with Prof Alison Diduck of UCL examining the changing role of the family courts.

CJRC hosts joint conference on 'Achieving compliance with road traffic law' with the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety at Brunel.

This well-attended one-day prestigious event in June 2012 enabled good knowledge-transfer links to be made between the academic research and practitioner communities on the roles of education, enforcement, prosecution and sentencing in helping to achieve compliance on the road. The CJRC is grateful to PACTS for their commitment to the conference.

Dr Dimitrios Giannoulopoulos has given a paper at the biennial conference of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences in New York, on ‘Legislating Miranda rights in France: why has it taken so long?’. His paper discussed cosmopolitanism and local resistance as conflicting powers shaping law reform.

The trio explored e-life and the challenges posed by the surge in the use of the Internet. Dr Riefa scrutinised the rise of the "consum'actor", a consumer empowered by the Internet to buy and sell items without the need for sophisticated technical knowledge but equally weakened in his position as a consumer traditionally protected by consumer law.

Dr Riefa is currently working on a project funded by the European Commission assessing the impact of Directive 2007/64/EC on payment services in the internal market and on the application of Regulation 924/2009 on cross-border payments in the Community.

Claire Corbett is part of an external research collaboration that has secured further funding to carry out research into the impact of over-drinking of alcohol on women drivers and pedestrians and how to reduce the problems caused by alcohol in this context.

The Criminal Justice Research Centre held a research symposium on Current Issues in Criminal Justice on the afternoon of 14th March which was open to staff and students. Speakers included Professor Jill Peay from the LSE Law School and also members of the CJRC at Brunel Law School.

The IPIMRC in the IPO consultation for copyright reform

The IPIMRC submitted a document in response to the consultation launched by the Intellectual Property Office on the proposals to change copyright law in the UK. The submission, prepared by Stavroula Karapapa and Maurizio Borghi, covers the problem of orphan work and the proposed exceptions for private copying and for text mining.

The opening speech was given by Joaquin Almunia, Commissioner responsible for Competition Policy. The sessions discussed the key topics of antitrust law and economics in 2012.

Professor Bantekas invited to speak at Sierra Leone Tribunal Confererence at the University of Pittsburgh

Professor Bantekas was invited to comment on the law of superior responsibility in the Sierra Leone Special Court. The conference is hosted by the University of Pittsburgh and includes presentations from more than 30 leading international criminal lawyers. It will take place between 19-21 April 2012.

Family Law, Gender and the State by Alison Diduck and Felicity Kaganas (2012, Hart Publishing)

Felicity Kaganas with Alison Diduck (of UCL) have published the third edition of their Text, Cases and Materials book on Family and Child law. This book adopts a socio-legal analysis, largely from a feminist perspective, of cases, policies, legislation and literature in the field.

Human Rights Centre inaugural seminar

On Tuesday 13th December the Human Rights Centre held its inaugural seminar at Brunel Law School.  The seminar, which provided a whistle stop tour through of some of today’s most controversial and pressing human rights issues, was chaired by Dr Alexandra Xanthaki. Speakers included Professor Javaid Rehman, Nadine El-Enany and Dr Rebecca Bates.
