As part of Brunel’s tradition of linking academic knowledge and practical experience, the Brunel LLM International Human Rights organized for a second consecutive year a study visit at the European Court of Human Rights. On the 20 March 2013, seven LLM students traveled to the city of Strasbourg and attended the hearing of the Grand Chamber at the much discussed case Del Rio Prada v Spain, concerning the conviction of a Spanish national for offences related to terrorist attacks. The students were accompanied by their lecturers Dr Eleni Polymenopoulou and Dr Andreas Dimopoulos, who had prepared the students in advance, in order to benefit from the hearing in the most fruitful way. Upon arrival at the Court, the students were received by the registry, and directed to the Grand Chamber, where they were given additional material on the case.

Following the hearing, the group was honoured to be received by one of the Judges of the Court, Judge Alexandre- Linos Sicilianos, who generously offered to meet with them. The students were delighted to meet the Judge in person and discuss with him the case, as well as to ask him questions about the interpretation of the European Convention, the Court's functioning, organization and role, and the possibilities of undertaking an internship at the European Court of Human Rights.
