Lectures: Towards a new regime for Data Protection in the EU

Dr Antonio Caselli (Italian Data Protection Autority) and Dr Vera Pozzato (EU Data Protection Secretariat) will discuss the law and challenges for data protection. They will analyse the current and the proposed new data protection regime in the EU. A focus on cloud computing will follow.

Dr Antonio Caselli will discuss the law and challenges for data protection of cloud computing.

Dr Caselli is a senior official at the Italian Data Protection Authority, in charge of international developments and information. After graduating in humanities, he worked for the Italian National Research Council specializing in ICT developments and social sciences. From 1994 to 1997 he worked at the Italian Ministry of Justice (Legislation Unit) and then joined the Italian Data Protection Authority, where he has been dealing with international matters and developments. He is a member of various working groups at EU level (subgroups of the "Article 29 Working Party", Contact Network of Anti-Spam Authorities) and is the head of a unit tasked with monitoring data protection- and privacy-relevant developments both in the EU and elsewhere for the Italian DPA.

Dr Vera Pozzato will present the current data protection regime in the EU and the relationship with third countries. She will also introduce the proposal for a new regime for data protection in the EU as designed by the European Commission and currently under the scrutiny of the European Parliament.

Dr Pozzato is the legal adviser at the European Data Protection Supervisor“s secretariat, member of the policy and consultation team. She is mainly involved in the preparation of opinions on legislative proposals of the European Commission, she advises the European Parliament and the Commission on drafting of legislative texts, she cooperates with the Article 29 Working Party in the technology field, and she gives specialised speeches at conferences in data protection. She is a specialist and follows the developments in the area of e-privacy technologies, customs and the financial sector and she has developed specialized knowledge in cloud computing and privacy. Formerly, she was officer in DG Competition of the European Commission and case handler in the field of media, IT and telecommunications, where she dealt with important merger cases such as NewsCorp/Premiere, Oracle/Sun Microsystems, T-Mobile/Orange UK and NL, and Google/DoubleClick.
